NEET and the opposition in tamilnadu

All about NEET 2017: A Factual Analysis

National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG)

And its opposition in Tamilnadu

I am not a supporter of NEET but let us analyze fact and figures

The NEET examination is conducted by the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) for  All India Medical Entrance. This exam was conducted in 1921 centres  in 103 cities for duration of  3 hours.  As per the exam conducting body, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2017 was a first-of-its-kind medical entrance exam which saw a record 11 lakh candidates apply for admissions to over 90,000 MBBS and BDS seats in all Government, Private and Deemed Medical Colleges across the country. While it may have been a landmark exam which broke numerous records, NEET 2017 wasn’t without its fair share of controversies. Even though, NEET 2016 is conducted in English and Hindi, it is announced that students can write exams in Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Assamese and Gujarati languages from 2017 onwards. ... NEET was declared illegal and unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of India in 2013. Cases were filed in various High Courts demanding for the test to be held again. Candidates underwent severe stress and had their patience tested as the court cases resulted in an indefinite postponement on the release of the answer keys and results. A lack of official communication from the CBSE’s side only added to the agony of the wait. The Supreme Court finally had to step in and direct the CBSE to declare the results before June 26.

NEET Results 2017 were finally declared on June 23, with Navdeep Singh of Punjab emerging as the topper by securing 697 marks out of 720. The CBSE also released a press release on the same day containing details of the various facts and figures which defined the exam.  A counselling schedule for 15% All India Quota seats was also released by the Medical Counselling Commitee (MCC) with all the various state authorities also beginning to release their schedules for admissions to medical courses based on NEET scores. As per the CBSE, candidates who cleared the NEET 2017 Cut Off scores will now be eligible to apply for apply for admissions to 65,170 MBBS seats in 470 medical colleges and 25,370 BDS seats in 308 dental colleges.

Some interesting facts and figures revealed by the CBSE with regard to NEET 2017 are that the number of female candidates outnumbered the number of male candidates by more than a lakh, more than 6 lakhs candidates were able to clear the exam and that candidates who opted for English and Hindi as their question paper languages of choice outnumbered

So, now you must have got a fair idea of how NEET 2017 is about to happen, and what kind of preparation you need to start with. Amidst much controversy, the Supreme Court ruled out AIMPT to be replaced by NEET, though this year it appeared in two phases. From next year, NEET will be a one-time exam, for which students need to start preparing.

Why it is being opposed in Tamilnadu

  1. It is causing burden on the student to prepare and attempt another exam.
  2. The value of +2 marks has no relevance as of now the admission is based on  + marks.
  3. People in rural areas could not compete and may be stand behind
  4. The deserving candidate may not able to secure a seat.
  5. State will lose its importance in the field of education.

Let us analyze the issues:

  1. Causing burden on the students as they are required to write additional exams

Even now various colleges such as deemed universities are conducting examination for admission into their college and the students are appearing for the same for securing admissions. This was not opposed till date by the students and also political parties.

  1. Value of the marks scored in +2 will lose its importance

There is a minimum marks to be secured in +2 for being eligible into MBBS seats however the admission is purely on the marks scored in NEET.

  1. People in rural areas may not compete with those of urban area

It may be true but, the fact from the admission to MBBS seats during 2017 shows the no of student from the so called backward districts of tamil nadu has increased a lot except Namakkal and Erode where the coaching is aiming only at scoring high marks in + 2 instead enhance the Knowledge

  1. Deserving candidate may not secure a seat

The candidate is termed as deserving is based on NEET marks and not on + 2 marks.

  1. State will lose its importance in education

The movement of education from the state subject to concurrent list was done in 1970s and all the parties were quite about it for 40 years.

Position in Tamilnadu after NEET

  • 62%  of the students selected though NEET are from state board
  • The reservation quota has not been affected as 69 % reservation has been observed in the admission
  • The stake of student of districts of tamilnadu also maintained
  • The Private medical college has stopped filling the management seat hoping the withdrawal of  NEET

  •

What are benefits of NEET

  1. All the institutes are covered under NEET and the management seat fees also fixed by the government to be in the range of Rs.20 to Rs.25 lacs instead of Rs. 100 lacs as it is now. The minority institutions also brought under NEET and hence more weaker section students will get admission into Medical. ( CMC vellore has stopped the admission to medical this year as they do not want to comply with NEET formalities. Till today they only admit Kerala Christine in their college although it is in Tamilnadu. The fees to be paid through banking channel and hence attract  TAX.
  2. The education standard will also be improved the coming years
  3. Students need not write exams prescribed the College or deemed universities instead write only one exam NEET.

Therefore, we will turn our agitation again NEET to cover

  1. against the Huge management fee charged by the college.
  2. Against the separate exams conducted by Deemed universities
  3. To include the reservation in minority education institutions
So that we will benefit more from one agitation.
